Officials are often asked, “How did you get started in officiating?”  The journey to football officiating begins with a passion for the game. Each official has a unique path to officiating and we look forward to help you begin yours…

WHAT DOES THE CVFOA DO FOR NEW OFFICIALS?

The CVFOA provides training for new officials. We enlist new officials into our mentor program where they’ll get to learn from some of our best officials. New officials also get the opportunity to work games in our local football leagues.

What can I expect during my 1st year?

New officials are assigned to work Flag football, JV, and Freshman games. Training begins in July. 

 

AM I TOO YOUNG OR TOO OLD?

We need officials of all ages.
 
CIF contests require you to be 18 by the start of the season (August). We have officials that work well into their 70’s and beyond. As long as you are physically fit to run with the players, we’ll be happy to have you join us. It’s never too late to learn something new

WHAT EQUIPMENT WILL I NEED TO OFFICIATE?

A new official will spend approximately $150 dollars (tax deductible) on uniforms, whistles, flags, etc… CVFOA has some gently used equipment available if needed at no cost. 

HOW MUCH DO OFFICIALS MAKE?

Officiating is not a full time job. It’s more like a fun sport you get to play and make money! It’s real rewards are the friends you make and knowing your presence is providing a safe environment for youth sports to be played. Flag football officials will make $67.50 (varsity) and $49.40 (non-varsity) per game. Tackle football officials make $90 (non-varsity) and $140.00 (varsity) per game.

WHEN DOES THE SEASON START?

Games usually begin the 3rd week in August and wrap up the last week of October. Playoffs run until the week of Thanksgiving. 

When Are The Games?

Flag football contests will be played on Tuesday nights. Tackle football games are usually on Thursday and Friday nights. Although some Wednesdays and Saturdays will have games as well. Contests are played at various times ranging from 3:30-6pm for non-varsity and usually 7pm for varsity.
